From the widely stretched field of problems "Rethinking Nature", impressive fragments of our reality - organic, inorganic, floral, spaces, structures, machines, etc. - are challenged for confrontation and superimposed to form "critical fairy tales" of a new tension-laden reality.
Timo Huber, fascinated by the seductive potential and aesthetic appeal of the visual worlds of mass media, cuts into them, fragments and distorts them in order to assemble the individual parts into associative new realities. These parts, from found and own photographic material, are processed in an analogue way with a dissecting knife and reshaped into montages of modified and subjective levels of meaning:
... and the glowing fire gives birth to intoxicating petals
and swarms of locusts flutter over decaying structures
and the chapel of the data centre is overgrown by flowering creepers
and the sprawling screen plage is buried under gentle mounds of moss
and the turtles dream their vision of freedom....
Born in Freistadt / Upper Austria in 1944, Huber studied architecture at the TH / TU Vienna. In 1967 he worked on actions and films of the Vienna Actionists and was a founding member of the architecture groups Zünd-Up (1969-72) and Salz der Erde (1970-72).
Zünd-Up as well as Salz der Erde exposed themselves with their utopias, experimental and visionary ideas and promoted a radicalized conception of architecture, which was essentially about political and social conflicts, whose socio-political brisance was expressed in provocation and protest. Huber's photomontages and drawings still stand in this context today, complemented by a wide range of themes from later decades.Fascinated by the potential for seduction and the irritating power of everyday images, Timo Huber combines and transforms in his montages with a scalpel in an analog way, found footage (mostly from mass media) into surprisingly new and constantly up-to-date narrative visual spaces. As is often the case in his drawings, he overlays and shifts different levels of meaning, each creating new realities - complex statements with personal or recent everyday references.
Timo Huber's own artistic works, as well as those of Zünd-Up and Salz der Erde, have been presented in numerous national and international exhibitions and are part of renowned collections including Albertina, Vienna; MUSA, Vienna; Wien Museum; MUMOK, Vienna; Landesgalerie Linz; Lentos, Linz; Centre Pompidou, Paris; V & A, London and Frac, Orléans.
Timo Huber lives as an architect and artist in Vienna.

Aus dem weitgespannten Problemfeld „Rethinking Nature“ werden beeindruckende Bruchstücke dieser Wirklichkeit – Organisches, Anorganisches, Florales, Räume, Strukturen, Maschinen etc. – zur Konfrontation gefordert und zu „kritischen Märchen“ einer neuen spannungsgeladenen Realität überlagert.
Timo Huber, der vom Verführungspotential und der ästhetischen Anziehungskraft der Bildwelten von Massenmedien fasziniert ist, schneidet in diese, zerstückelt und verfremdet sie, um die Einzelteile zu assoziativen neuen Wirklichkeiten zusammen zu fügen.
Diese Teile, aus gefundenem und eigenem Fotomaterial, werden auf analogem Weg mit dem Seziermesser bearbeitet und zu Montagen von veränderten und subjektiven Bedeutungsebenen umgestaltet:
... und das glosende Feuer gebiert berauschende Blütenblätter
und Heuschreckenschwärme flattern über verfallene Strukturen und die Kapelle des Datencenters wird von blühenden Schlingpflanzen überwuchert
und die ausufernde Bildschirmplage unter sanften Mooshügeln begraben
und die Schildkröten träumen ihre Freiheitsvision...
1944 in Freistadt / OÖ geboren, absolvierte Huber ein Architekturstudium an der TH / TU Wien, arbeitete 1967 bei Aktionen und Filmen der Wiener Aktionisten mit und war Gründungsmitglied der Architekturgruppen Zünd-Up (1969-72) und Salz der Erde (1970-72). Timo Huber lebt als Architekt und Künstler in Wien.Sowohl Zünd-Up, als auch Salz der Erde exponierten sich mit ihren Utopien, experimentellen und visionären Ideen und propagierten eine radikalisierte Architekturauffassung, bei der es im wesentlichen um politische und soziale Konflikte ging, deren gesellschaftspolitische Brisanz sich in Provokation und Protest äußerten.
In diesem Kontext und um mannigfaltige Themenspektren der späteren Jahrzehnte ergänzt, stehen Hubers Fotomontagen und Zeichnungen bis heute.
Timo Hubers eigene künstlerische Arbeiten sowie jene von Zünd-Up und Salz der Erde, wurden in zahlreichen Ausstellungen im In- und Ausland gezeigt und befinden sich in bedeutenden Sammlungen (u.a. Albertina, Wien; MUSA, Wien; Wien Museum; mumok, Wien; Landesgalerie Linz; Lentos, Linz; Centre Pompidou, Paris; V & A, London; Frac, Orléans).
