The moment man left nature in its original sense as a habitat and created a new derivative for himself, the derivative of the city, the concept of nature also changed.
Nature in the current sense is no longer to be equated only with biological nature, but also with an artificial environment newly created by man.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Leo Kandl began to capture these changing habitats in a very respectful way, immersing himself in different milieus with his camera. The main protagonist in his photographs is the human being who actively participates in a new and constantly changing environment. In this urbanized form of nature, he represents the center of a newly imagined world, occupying it and shamelessly exploiting the characteristics of the new habitat.
Kandl's photographs are dialogues in which he establishes a relationship with the world on the other side of the camera with sensitivity, serenity, and patience.
Kandl's masterly and unpretentious photography over a period of 50 years is impressive: from the wine house portraits on Vienna's Gürtel to the free portraits in the USA or Russia; from the textiles in the depots of the Bundestheater to the jackets and hats from his own collection; from the facades of the Floridsdorf apartment buildings to the markets in Tehran.
Leo Kandl pays tribute to his motifs.

Kandls Fotografien sind Dialoge, in denen er mit Feingefühl, Ruhe und Geduld eine Verbindung mit der Welt auf der anderen Seite der Kamera herstellt.
Der Bogen, den er meisterhaft und unprätentiös als Fotograf über 50 Jahre spannt, ist beeindruckend: Von den Weinhausportraits am Gürtel in Wien zu den Free Portraits in den USA oder in Russland; von den Textilstücken der Depots der Bundestheater zu den Sakkos und Hüten aus dem eigenen Fundus; von den Fassaden der Floridsdorfer Wohnbauten zu den Märkten in Teheran.
Leo Kandl erweist seinen Motiven die Ehre.

In dem Moment in dem der Mensch die Natur im ursprünglichen Sinn als Lebensraum verlassen hat und ein neues Derivat für sich entstehen ließ, das Derivat der Stadt, hat sich auch der Begriff der Natur verändert.
Natur im jetzigen Sinn ist nicht mehr nur mit der biologischen Natur in Gleichklang zu setzen, sondern auch mit einer künstlichen, vom Menschen neu erschaffen Umgebung.
Leo Kandl hat in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren begonnen, in einer sehr respektvollen Art und Weise, diese veränderten Lebensräume festzuhalten und taucht dabei mit seiner Kamera in unterschiedliche Milieus ein. Hauptprotagonist in seinen Fotografien ist der Mensch, der aktiv an einer neuen und sich ständig wandelnden Umgebung teilnimmt. Er stellt in dieser urbanisierten Form von Natur das Zentrum einer neu gedachten Welt dar, besetzt diese und nutzt die Eigenschaften des neuen Habitats schamlos aus.
