On the occasion of Leo Kandl's 80th birthday, gallery rauminhalt_harald bichler is dedicating an extensive solo exhibition to the photographer and presents a representative cross-section of his oeuvre. In addition to photographs, his rarely exhibited gouaches and Polaroids will also be on display.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Leo Kandl began to capture urban living spaces in a very respectful manner, immersing himself in different milieus with his camera. The main protagonist in his photographs is the human being, who actively participates in a new and constantly changing environment. Kandl's photographs are dialogs in which he establishes a connection with the world on the other side of the camera with sensitivity, tranquillity and patience.
The range that he masterfully and unpretentiously stretches as a photographer over 50 years is impressive: from the wine house portraits on the Gürtel in Vienna to the free portraits in the USA or in the Ukraine; from the textiles in the depots of the Bundestheater to the jackets and hats from his own collection; from the facades of the Floridsdorf residential buildings to the markets in Tehran. Anlässlich des 80. Geburtstages von Leo Kandl widmet die Galerie rauminhalt_harald bichler dem Fotografen eine umfangreiche Einzelausstellung und präsentiert einen repräsentativen Querschnitt seines Schaffens. Neben Fotografien werden ebenfalls seine bislang selten ausgestellten Gouachen und Polaroids zu sehen sein.
Leo Kandl hat in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren begonnen, in einer sehr respektvollen Art und Weise, urbane Lebensräume festzuhalten und taucht dabei mit seiner Kamera in unterschiedliche Milieus ein. Hauptprotagonist in seinen Fotografien ist der Mensch, der aktiv an einer neuen und sich ständig wandelnden Umgebung teilnimmt. Kandls Fotografien sind Dialoge, in denen er mit Feingefühl, Ruhe und Geduld eine Verbindung mit der Welt auf der anderen Seite der Kamera herstellt.
Der Bogen, den er meisterhaft und unprätentiös als Fotograf über 50 Jahre spannt, ist beeindruckend: Von den Weinhausportraits am Gürtel in Wien zu den Free Portraits in den USA oder in der Ukraine; von den Textilstücken der Depots der Bundestheater zu den Sakkos und Hüten aus dem eigenen Fundus; von den Fassaden der Floridsdorfer Wohnbauten zu den Märkten in Teheran.
