Bench "Sheaves" (willow)

Steven Banken

For this piece, Steven Banken turned to the crafts of Biesbosch, following the rhythm of the seasons. Reed is cut down in winter and bundled up to be used as furniture piece in the summer. By autumn, the sheaves fall apart and are used as compost for new willows and reeds to grow. This waste is also important for wildlife as it is used as nesting material or floating island.

The Biesbosch National Park used to be a pristine natural area for material supply. Workers stayed for weeks in the woods during wintertime to cut down reeds and willows.
