Within the framework of the exhibition series "Unter Vorbehalt" (Under Reservation), the gallery rauminhalt_harald bichler will present mostly new works by Jakob Gasteiger from 28.08. to 10.09.2020. Among others, 2 large-format circular paintings in neon colours will be on display.

Jakob Gasteiger (born 1953 in Salzburg) is one of the most important Austrian contemporary painters and is considered a representative of analytical painting. In his works he questions the parameters of painting and thematizes, expands and breaks through the boundaries of graphics and painting as well as painting and sculpture.

The most extensive and at the same time probably best-known group of the artist's works are his monochrome paintings with relief-like structures, which are created by using a comb spatula when applying the paint on the painting surface. Within this working process, Gasteiger does not use paint as a carrier of content or meaning, but as a material per se. It serves the artist, among other things, to investigate questions of color materials and the boundaries between non-color and color. The comb spatula is Gasteiger's tool. It replaces the brush and, as he points out himself, enables the artist to work without personal handwriting and in the sense of a mechanical process.
 

Since the end of 2018, the artist has been expanding this group of works with the use of neon colours, which accentuate the relief-like structures of these compositions in a new way. The new colour spectrum is now also used for the round format that Gasteiger has already tried and tested for a long time. In the context of the exhibition, 2 of his newly created large-format circular  paintings in neon colours will be presented for the first time.

Im Rahmen der Ausstellungsreihe „Unter Vorbehalt“ präsentiert die Galerie rauminhalt_harald bichler von 28.08. bis 10.09.2020 zum Großteil neue Arbeiten von Jakob Gasteiger. Gezeigt werden unter anderem 2 großformatige Scheibenbilder in Neonfarben.

Jakob Gasteiger (geb. 1953 in Salzburg) zählt zu den bedeutendsten österreichischen Künstlern der Gegenwart und gilt als Vertreter der analytischen Malerei. Er befragt in seinen Arbeiten Parameter der Malerei und thematisiert, erweitert und durchbricht die Grenzen von Grafik und Malerei sowie Malerei und Skulptur.

 

Die umfangreichste und zugleich wohl bekannteste Werkgruppe des Künstlers bilden seine monochromen Bilder mit reliefartigen Strukturen, die sich durch das Verwenden einer Kammspachtel beim Auftragen der Farbe auf dem Bilduntergrund abbilden. Die Farbe wird innerhalb dieses Arbeitsprozesses von Gasteiger nicht als Inhalts- oder Bedeutungsträger eingesetzt, sondern als Material per se. Sie dient dem Künstler unter anderem bei der Untersuchung von Fragen nach Farbmaterialien und den Grenzen zwischen Nichtfarbe zu Farbe. Die Kammspachtel ist Gasteigers Werkzeug. Sie ersetzt den Pinsel und ermöglicht, wie er selbst betont, ohne persönliche Handschrift und im Sinne eines mechanischen Prozesses zu arbeiten.

Seit Ende 2018 erweitert der Künstler diese Werkgruppe mit der Anwendung von Neonfarben, welche die reliefartigen Strukturen dieser Kompositionen neu akzentuieren. Anwendung findet das neue Farbspektrum nun auch für das von Gasteiger bereits lang erprobte kreisrunde Bildformat. Im Rahmen der Ausstellung werden 2 seiner neu entstandenen großformatigen Scheibenbilder in Neonfarben erstmals präsentiert.
