Gilbert Bretterbauer

Rekonfiguration

The exhibition comprises objects, abstract paintings, drawings, textiles and lamps of Gilbert Bretterbauer. Although this mix seems eclectic, the various pieces are closely related and function as a whole in the exhibition space.

On show are a bench made out of webbed grids, a floor lamp that seems to flourish from the complex structure of the seat, as well as a checkered iron wire that seems to reveal the details of the surrounding objects. Iron branches protrude on concrete lumps and tell a story about construction and deconstruction. These objects deploy a gestural aesthetics, delicately standing on wooden pedestals the artist fabricated. These grids follow a strong and simple geometric structure and can be perceived as sculptures.

All of those elements are to be found again in the paintings echoing the traditional intention of painting, that is to convey an optic deception, a spatial illusion, as well as intertwined ornemental patterns.

Bretterbauer's relationship to color resemble the ones he developed in materiality and forms: it is all about gradients and the surface's haptic qualities.
